Upon detailed analysis of Jombang, Indonesia at a masterplanning level, a crucial development and progression for the city was the expansion of the train station. The existing station had quite sparse functionality, with no additional facilities to the functional requirements of the station, as well as a capacity limit. The station consisted of two train lines, which is consistent with the railway system in the region. The masterplan proposed a significant increase in density and a large expansion of the built environment to accommodate a large increase in population within the region, as well as an influx of workers from outside the immediate area. With the increase of all these factors the train station was outlined as a crucial redevelopment.
An exercise was undertaken to determine and appropriate transportation system through the region, the outcome being a multi-modal solution, incorporating a large-scale system (to travel longer distances) in the form of a railway, and a small-scale system (to travel shorter distances) in the form of a bus network. The existing railway station, was outlined to become a regional transit centre, a district orientated hub for transport and community use.
